Chapter News from South Korea (March 5, 2018)

Every year since 2000, the Korean Chapter of the System Dynamics Society holds winter and summer conferences. The 2018 annual winter conference was held on February 25, 2018 at Korea University featuring keynote speech "System Dynamics, the 32 year's Research Life,"  by Dr. Young-pyo Kim, chair-professor of Chonbuk National University. In this conference, there were seven presentations and one poster presentation. In his closing speech, Benjamin, the president of Korean Chapter, stressed the membership renewal of System Dynamics Society and participation of ISDC in Iceland, hoping some presenters will attend the ISDC in Iceland. Professor Nam-Hee Choi of Korea National University of Transportation and Professor Jinhyung Chon of Korea University were selected as a research team on the General Collaborative Research Support Projects of the Korea Research Foundation. The research title is “Simulation Modeling for Distribution Pattern Analysis of Social-Economic-Ecological System according to Four Major River Project and Enhancing Resilience.” This research received a grant of nearly $93,000 from the Government, which is the biggest research project based on System Dynamics ever in Korea. The collaborative research team will attempt to understand the social-economic-ecological problems caused by the large-scale national projects such as the Four Major River Project, which was driven by former President of Korea and became a very controversial issue, and to suggest policy direction through simulation modeling. Also, this research can act as a climate change simulator, based on the integrated system of all variables centered on Four Major River Project, including uncertainties, climate change, social-economic-ecological systems, and resilience. This research is expected to provide insights to various researchers as leading research to solve the sustainability of the environment and the conflict structure problem of a human society that can occur at the national level beyond the regional level.
